Construction Duration:

Design-Build
$17.9 million
2010-2011

Scope/Summary

The Miramar College Police Station will include a spacious reception area, a conference room, office areas, and a secure suspect processing area.  These spaces are organized along the building’s perimeter to provide for a welcoming and well-lit area maximizing natural daylight.  The station will be attached to the campus side (west side) of the parking structure, creating a strong integration of the new structure into the existing campus.  The tower element will provide strong visibility from the campus as well as the transit center, and enhance the sense of public safety on campus.  A terra cotta façade will tie the new facility into the look and feel of existing buildings on campus.  The three-story parking structure will provide 815 parking spaces.

The project is designed to obtain a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certification – the highest possible certification and the first Platinum project for a community college locally.  It includes a number of unique sustainable features:

  • The project includes a green roof and green screen with vegetation that helps insulate the building from intense temperatures and heat gain.  They also absorb storm water, reducing the need for complex and expensive draining systems, and minimizing our impact on the local storm drain system.
  • The tower element serves as a solar chimney to create a natural flow of ventilation in the building.  Louvers in the tower’s upper level will allow warm air to rise by convection and escape to the outside. At the same time, cooler air can be drawn in through vents at the lower level, driving the air flow even long after the sun has gone down.
  • Significant energy savings will be achieved with daylight harvesting.  Main spaces are grouped along the perimeter with large windows and light shelves.  Internal areas will be day-lit through solar tubes that bring light down from the roof.

By The Numbers:

  • Four level parking structure has 815 new parking spots
  • 270,000 gross square feet of floor area in the parking structure; 5,108 square feet in the police station
  • 8,470 yards of concrete
  • 800 total concrete truck deliveries
  • 11,160 linear feet of steel beams
  • 15,948 linear feet of paint striping in parking structure
  • 12 solar tube diffusers
  • 2,360 square feet of green roof on the police station which consists of 10 different varieties of plants
