LEEDing the WayThe Mathematics & Business building at Miramar College, newly minted LEED Silver.

As part of the SDCCD’s Green Building Policy, all Proposition S and N projects and major renovations are designed to obtain the highest possible Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).

LEED is an internationally recognized green building certification, providing third-party verification that a building was designed and built using strategies and techniques aimed at improving energy savings and water efficiency, reducing CO2 emissions, improving indoor environmental quality, and improving stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts.  San Diego Gas & Electric indicates the reduced energy use for these green buildings will return significant annual cost savings of approximately $370,000. In all, the SDCCD is on track to obtain a total of 30 LEED certifications - more than any other higher education institution locally - and including 17 LEED Silver, 11 Gold, one Platinum, and one Certified building. The Miramar College Police Station, is designed to obtain a LEED Platinum certification, the highest designation possible and the first higher-education facility in San Diego County to be awarded as such.
